Number of attacks on police officers
Will Inglis made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was successful.
From: Will Inglis
Dear New Zealand Police,
I am after data showing the number of violent incidents in which police were injured in the past four years.
If possible, please provide a breakdown of this data by:
- year
- whether hospitalisation was required
- whether a firearm was involved (not carried by the police)
- whether another form of weapon was involved (e.g. a knife)
I realise you may not have all of this data readily available, so am happy to discuss other breakdowns that might be helpful.
Yours faithfully,
Will Inglis

I haven't found any information about how serious the injury was, or whether any weapons were involved, though. Hopefully Police will be able to help you find that information if it's available in one of their dashboards.
I know some information about this is included in Police's TOR (Tactical Options Reporting) database, but each TOR entry is focussed on a police officer using one or more tactical options against a member of the public, so it's possible this database wouldn't include all incidents in which police officers were injured by somebody.
Here's a link to the most recent TOR data released by Police, which includes links to previous datasets: https://fyi.org.nz/request/15207-tactica...

Hi Richard,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I really appreciate the quick and helpful response.
I'm not comfortable putting my personal phone number on here as FYI is a public tool. I don't suppose there's an email address I could send it to using my personal email address instead? Would be great to have a chat about how best to use your publicly available data.
Yours faithfully,
Will Inglis

I see the "Proceedings (Police Stations)" dashboard on the Police website has a "Details" tab which allows filtering down to ANZSOC subgroups "Assaults on Police (No Injury)" and "Assaults on Police (Physical Injury)", and it lets you select a time period from 1 July 2014 up until (as I'm writing this annotation) 31 May 2021.
