Preferential use of COVID-19 unvaccinated blood products
Simon Brown made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Simon Brown to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Simon Brown
Dear Ministry of Health,
Can the Ministry of Health inform whether there is any medical procedure performed in NZ where blood products from COVID-19 unvaccinated individuals is preferentially sort or preferred.
Is the Ministry of Health aware of any instances of COVID-19 unvaccinated blood products being preferentially used in medical procedures performed overseas. My interest is restricted to nations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
My interest is nothing to do with the safety or efficacy of vaccination with eg Cominarty (Pfizer) but with an improved outcome for any medical procedure when using blood from unvaccinated individuals, whether the individual donor has a confirmed history of natural infection or not.
Yours faithfully,
Simon B Brown (PhD)

Dear OIA Requests,
I appreciate your response. I am, however, concerned that by transferring my request to the NZ Blood Service it will not actually answer my core question: is there any medical procedure performed either here in NZ or overseas in which the clinical outcome is improved when using blood products from COVID-19 unvaccinated individuals? While I am happy to learn what the general supplier of NZ human blood products might know and do my concern would be whether they provide all blood products used within the hospitals and whether there are any exceptions such as the collection of CD34+ haemopoietic stem cells from placental cord blood. There is also the issue of bone marrow transplants. I appreciate that bone marrow may not be considered a blood product yet it is where our blood cells and platelets are produced.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Brown

NZBS is the sole provider of blood and blood products to clinical services
in New Zealand. I can confirm that there is no medical procedure, that we
are aware of in New Zealand, for which blood or blood products from donors
not previously vaccinated against COVID-19 has been sought / preferred.
Similarly, I am aware of no clinical procedures that would be considered
to require or benefit from such products, in any OECD country.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
