Plans of Savings in Health Sector
Sam Malik made this Official Information request to Shane Reti
The request was partially successful.
From: Sam Malik
Dear Shane Reti,
My question is when it was said that the damages done by Ms Ardern’s govt re creation of Health NZ instead of getting more doctors in, can’t be reversed but paused at where it is at the moment then why a new contract was given to an IT company in Wellington to migrate the Health NZ employees onto a new system for no apparent reason which would benefit NZers health.
Also, as per a media report, the Te Aka Whai Ora is being disestablished but the teams would still exist but under the Health NZ umbrella and some hiring is still going ahead. Can you explain how come the savings it would make, if any?
Yours faithfully,
S Malik

Dear Shane Reti (MIN),
Thanks for the reply however this doesn’t satisfy my request. I refine this as below:
How much did this IT change of system cost Health NZ and any correspondence on this, that may or may not suggest that this change was necessary and would help in better health outcomes.
Yours sincerely,
Sam Malik

Kia ora Sam,
Thank you for your request for official information, received on 13 May
2024 for:
“How much did this IT change of system cost Health NZ and any
correspondence on this, that may or may not suggest that this change was
necessary and would help in better health outcomes."
In order to provide you with the information requested, could you please
clarify the information you are seeking or what information in particular
you are after?
For context, Health NZ / Te Whatu Ora was formed from the merger of 29
separate organisations (formerly District Health Boards and other
entities). This has been a very large undertaking with many constituent
elements. No element of the migration that we’ve used external providers
for immediately meets the description “an IT company in Wellington",
although some individual elements of work were completed using external
providers.
Please clarify what “IT change of system” are you specifically referring
to?
For example, do you mean our desktop/digital workspaces, or clinical
equipment, or public-facing websites, or something else? Was there a
specific media report or article that could provide context?
We look forward to receiving your response.
