nurses from Ireland and the UK have transferred their registration to New Zealand
Josh made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
The request was successful.
From: Josh
Dear Ministry of Health,
Could you please provide the data as below:
How many nurses from Ireland and the UK have transferred their registration to New Zealand? And among them, how many are currently practising or have practised in New Zealand?
Concerns have been raised that nurses from Ireland and the UK are primarily using their New Zealand nursing registrations as a means to eventually obtain Australian nursing registrations, without actively contributing to or benefiting New Zealand's healthcare sector. Why does the New Zealand Nursing Council support this practice instead of considering measures such as temporary registration until nurses have acquired a minimum of two years of work experience in New Zealand?
Yours faithfully,
Josh

Kia ora Josh,
As advised by the Ministry of Health, your query has been passed to us
here at the Nursing Council for response.
Please see below figures, which relate to Internationally Qualified Nurses
(IQNs) added to the register during registration year 2023/24 (01/04/2023
– 31/03/2024):
Number Registered Number that have held
01/04/2023 - 31/03/2024 an APC with Nursing
Council
IQN with previous
registration in UK 4997 4876
IQNs with previous
registration in Ireland 1342 1327
Total IQNs registered
(including other countries) 12341 12121
Note that this represents the number of newly registered IQNs with either
the UK or Ireland as their most recent registration country, which is not
necessarily the country in which they gained their initial nursing
qualification. For context, the total number of IQNs registered in the
time period are also provided. Figures presenting the most recent
registration country of newly registered IQNs are regularly published in
our quarterly data report, which can be found on our website: [1]Workforce
statistics (nursingcouncil.org.nz)
The second column presents the number of each group that have held at
least one Annual Practising Certificate (APC) allowing them to practise in
New Zealand, however it should be noted that this does not necessarily
mean that they have practised or are practising here.
The Nursing Council is required to register nurses who meet the prescribed
qualifications, are fit for registration and are competent to practise in
New Zealand, and to promptly consider all applications under section 17 of
the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. Workforce
planning, development and retention is not a function of the Nursing
Council under that Act.
