Sea level measurements in Buller
Kevin Smith made this Official Information request to West Coast Regional Council
West Coast Regional Council did not have the information requested.
From: Kevin Smith
Dear West Coast Regional Council,
A sea level buoy has recently been deployed in Westport.
I am requesting correspondence about the level measuring equipment that was used for previous recordings.
The chart at the beginning of the recent publication 'West Coast Region Coastal Hazards mapping methodology shows plots for Charleston and Westport.
This NIWA and WCRC booklet is dated 29 April 2024.
Could you please provide copies of the correspondence pertaining to those two sites ?
I am seeking info on the data gathering, site maintenance, site calibrations and the compensation methods applied.
ie, How the data was obtained, how it was checked and then what atmospheric and sea pressures, temperatures and tidal factors were subsequently applied.
The same document refers to LiDAR measurements.
Could you please advise what vertical changes have been detected in the Buller coastal region over the past decades ?
I have heard from a local surveyor that a rise in ground level has been recorded.
This would be by a number of measuring techniques so I am interested in the rate of rise and the method used.
Yours faithfully,
Kevin Smith

West Coast Regional Council
Dear Kevin,
I refer to your official information request received on 19 July 2024 for
information relating to methods and data collection for sea level
monitoring in the Buller area. We have further assessed your request and
have decided to transfer the majority of your request to NIWA, with the
exception of our response below regarding the reference to a buoy in the
first sentence of your email.
WCRC installed a wave buoy in July 2024 which collects data on wave
spectra (significant wave height, wave period, peak wave direction and
spread, mean wave direction and spread, wind, sea surface temperature, and
atmospheric pressure). The wave buoy is located approximately 3km north
of the mouth of the Buller River. The purpose of the buoy is to assist
the Council with coastal flood monitoring and flood warning, both in
immediate response, and building a long-term dataset to improve inundation
mapping of flooding though Westport in the future. The data collected
will be available for the public to view on the WCRC website, expected to
be available in the next few weeks.
In relation to the remainder of the request, the information to which your
request relates is not held by us and is believed to be more closely
connected with the functions of NIWA. In these circumstances, we are
required by section 12 of the Local Government Official Information and
Meetings Act to transfer your request.
You will hear further from NIWA concerning the remainder of your request.
Yours sincerely,
Leah Buchanan
