I would like to let you know that we are requiring more time to respond to
your request. I’m sorry that we will not be able to provide you with the
information tomorrow.

Auckland Council is extending the time limit for responding to your
request under section 14 of the Local Government Official Information and
Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA). We will reply to your request by 16 December
2024. Please note this is a maximum response time and we will endeavour to
respond sooner.

The reason for this extension is:

- Consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are ongoing
and a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the
original time limit.

- The request is for a large quantity of official information or
necessitates a search through a large quantity of information and meeting
the original time limit would unreasonably interfere with the operations
of the local authority.

Please note you have the right to request a review of this extension from
the Ombudsman.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Ngâ mihi,

Amanda

Thank you Amanda,

I just seek clarification over a comment made in the Official Information release,

“there have been no fatal drownings in council pools for at least 17 years”

This comment seems inconsistent with information held by Stats NZ, they record four drownings between November 2007 to December 2022.

Incident dates 24/11/2007, 5/12/2011. 10/2:2017, 1/4/2017.

Could you please recheck the information provided.

Yours sincerely,

Scott

Thank you for your email.

Our statement that there were no fatal drownings in the last 17 years is
correct. We are not responsible for the public databases and their
classification of fatalities in and around water.

There has not been a death by drowning in Auckland Council owned or
operated public pools since November 2007, although there have been two
fatalities in or near water.

The two fatalities at council's pools since the death of Harlem Ru-Meti at
Massey Park Aquatic Centre on 24 November 2007 were not caused by
drowning.

The details of the fatal incidents in this period are:

o 5 February 2011, at Waiwera Thermal Resort. Waiwera is not an Auckland
Council owned or operated pool.
o 10 February 2017, at Glen Innes Pool and Leisure Centre. A male
triathlete in his mid-20's experienced a serious medical event on
poolside and fell into the pool. His death was not caused by drowning.
o 1 April 2017, at Parnell Baths. A 20-year-old male experienced a
serious medical event while in the pool and received immediate
emergency treatment. His death not caused by drowning.
