Please elucidate the proper interpretation of certain supplied data series.

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Nicky McLean to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Nicky McLean
Dear Electricity Authority,
Via your organisation's web site https://www.emi.ea.govt.nz/Wholesale/Dat... there are links to seven sub-directories, each containing monthly data files offering half-hourly data on various aspects of electricity generation and consumption in most of New Zealand. Each file contains data for multiple data series, each identified by a sequence of code letters and digits. A straightforward check finds some 2,311 different name sequences across the various files, though some names appear in more than one sub-directory! Many of these names can be deciphered (hopefully correctly, a separate issue), but the problem here is that other name sequences are unintelligible.
My request therefore is for information that would elucidate the correct interpretation so that the data series may be placed into proper relationships with other data series. For instance, given names A1, A2, A3, and A it might be that A = (A1 + A2 + A3), or, the total "A" action is (A + A1 + A2 + A3), or, these are all variants of the single activity at A.
Instead of more hand-waving generalities, here are specifics on some two hundred and seventeen names whose interpretation is dark to me.
First, a collection of names for which every supplied datum is zero:

The greatest value in this group is 6102·527 (for the last), but the corresponding average is just 118·451. None of these series have negative values.
Most of these name sequences do not identify the unit of measurement; those that do state KWH (in a half-hour) as in the penultimate example. Could it be that units are instead Megawatt-hours? This would cause small numbers to appear, though this would have no effect on the all-zero values. But if not, many of the values are being specified to a fraction of a watt-hour (as for the last example), something surely out-of-place in statistics on the national network where a kilowatt is a small thing. Given that this data collection is given the heading "Metered-Data", one wonders just what meters where are measuring this sort of value, and what it means.
Many name sequences include the text DEF - one could guess a meaning for this, but it would be better to have definite information in place of guesswork, and for the other name parts too.
Since this is all information that you publish, I hope that you also have information on the meaning that you can provide.
Yours faithfully,
Nicky McLean

Kia ora Nicky,
Thank you for your request of 30 January 2025, under the Official Information Act 1982, for the following information:
- "Via your organisation's web site https://www.emi.ea.govt.nz/Wholesale/Dat... there are links to seven sub-directories, each containing monthly data files offering half-hourly data on various aspects of electricity generation and consumption in most of New Zealand. My request therefore is for information that would elucidate the correct interpretation so that the data series may be placed into proper relationships with other data series. Subject: [External] Official Information request - Please elucidate the proper interpretation of certain supplied data series.
Please be careful with this email as it has bypassed our usual Junk Email checks

Dear Electricity Authority,
Via your organisation's web site https://www.emi.ea.govt.nz/Wholesale/Dat... there are links to seven sub-directories, each containing monthly data files offering half-hourly data on various aspects of electricity generation and consumption in most of New Zealand. Each file contains data for multiple data series, each identified by a sequence of code letters and digits.

Salve, Tessa.
Thank you for the response from Airihi Mahuika, which arrived on the last day of the twenty working days allowance. Perhaps the nice colours took a long time to arrange. The third from last line (in Appendix A) declared DEF to stand for DEFault loss code, which means that various speculative and unproductive interpretations can be suppressed, however "should translate to Grid Connected" is not much help, because (aside from the worrying "should"), what isn't connected to the grid?
The schedule of information concerning the meaning of the various codes used in the various data file collections (Embedded, Unit_level, etc.) covers interpretations already made (for the many hundreds of intelligible data series) but it is a little troubling to see repeatedly "Always F = Unknown/Unused/Final?" - surely this should be well understood, so why the alternatives, why the question mark? And codes other than "F" have been encountered too, so their meaning is even less clear.
The Generation_MD data collection contains non-trivial mistakes that have already been described. Further, assigning a fuel type for Huntly is difficult, because the main generation (the four steam turbines, now three) involves burning coal OR natural gas, not just coal so the statement "usefully identify separate fuel types per unit, eg. Huntly" is not so useful, even though a correct attribution over the years would be of interest.
And despite the assertion "always KWh", here and there the original data occasionally employ other units (disregarding "reactive"), but, your organisation seems always to have assumed that the units are KWh (even if the source data actually states otherwise) and therefore asserts that the units are always KWh, and so errors result. I can supply examples, but your organisation declares no interest in these data.
The main point of my request was that despite employing the usual guesswork/interpretation of the various name fields (much as described in Appendix A), many data series names are unintelligible, such as those I explicitly listed. That is, although applying the interpretative suggestions such as Appendix A offers, I cannot relate them to any identifiable entity in the actual world of electricity generation and consumption at actual places, especially when the values being supplied are strange as well. For example, what might be a likely new solar PV farm has data showing generation at night yet not during the day, while consumption is the other way around. Perhaps the codes are wrong? Then, data for the following month were quite different. There has also been excited news media talk about the solar farm's generation manifesting at a distant retirement home (or, being deemed to be thus), so the metering data reflecting this (if they do) might indeed be strange.
Thus, I was hoping for clear descriptions of what these data series represent, but it seems that your organisation has no idea, merely receiving data supplied at the whims of some more puissant data holder, and has no interest in asking them to explain anything. Would they (whoever they are) respond to my queries? Or claim also that they have no knowledge of nor use for the data they supply?
Would your intended new and more wonderful data handling system and its data be fully understood and well organised? The existing situation suggests otherwise.
Your .pdf response as seen at my end offers an e-mail of oix#xx.xxt.nz (read the # as an at-sign) and the link address associated with that text (which is shown in the document underlined and in blue) is mailto:xxx#xx.xxxx.xx Possibly, this is due to some organisational ploy by the FYI website to defend us from spammers and the like.
Vale, Tessa.
Yours sincerely,
Nicky McLean
