Information on access to Birkenhead wharf.

Coss Weeble made this Official Information request to Auckland Council

The request was successful.

From: Coss Weeble

Dear Auckland Council,

I am aware that private boats (i.e. Launches) are permitted to use Birkenhead wharf to board passengers and supplies, so long as they don't interfere with Ferry comings and goings. My question is, which part of the wharf is available to the public, for this purpose. It is not obvious, that there is an area that the public can use, the docking facilities are covered with signs restricting their use to Ferries.

Yours faithfully,

Coss Weeble

Thank you for your request for information about access to Birkenhead
wharf.

All Auckland Transport (AT) wharves and ferry terminals are for commercial
use only and are used by AT contracted ferry operators who run to a set
timetable i.e. Fullers, Bellaire etc.

AT does not allow any other vessel to tie up alongside or moor at or near
an AT wharf or ferry terminal without a permit, as this could cause ferry
delays or a serious safety risk for all vessels and passengers.

If a permit is required:

o The AT ferry team will check that requested timings for use of the
berth will not clash and obstruct normal ferry service operations
o The permit should be applied for 10 days prior to arrival
o The permit is valid only for the specific day it is applied for
o Permits cannot be issued to cover the entire year
o Costs will be communicated by the team upon receiving the application

If you wish to obtain a permit send details to
[1][email address] with the following details:

o name
o phone number
o email
o vessel details - name and length
o date/s of booking
o arrival time
o departure time
o number of passengers on board - including crew
o any other relevant details

I see that "Recreational Vessels: These vessels may use the wharf for loading and unloading passengers and provisions, but they must not leave the vessel unattended. The maximum berthing time is 30 minutes, and exceeding this time incurs a layover fee" is no longer current. --- https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/plan... --- The Auckland Council Legacy Provisions on Wharves Bylaw 2015, which included such regulations, was allowed to lapse on October 29, 2022. --- Its appears that public wharves are reserved for commercial operators.
