Child Witness Interviewing

Ross Francis made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

Response to this request is long overdue. By law New Zealand Police should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: Ross Francis

Dear New Zealand Police,

I have the following information request regarding the interviewing of child witnesses.

In 2015, how many child witnesses deemed to be at-risk were interviewed five times in regards to the same event, and what were the age(s) of those child witnesses?

In 1992, how many child witnesses deemed to be at-risk were interviewed five times in regards to the same event, and what were the age(s) of those child witnesses?

What is the rationale for the assertion, as per police guidelines for interviewing at-risk children, that “[i]n most cases one forensic video interview will be sufficient”?

Under what circumstances (if any) would five forensic interviews be acceptable for an at-risk child?

Please note I do not require or request the opinion of the person responding to these questions. I require information based on facts, research and or information held by police. Please do not send me the latest Specialist Child Witness Guide as I am already in receipt of that publication which, incidentally, does not contain the information I have requested.

Yours faithfully,

Ross Francis
