The request was successful.
From: SBG
Dear New Zealand Police,
I'd like to know how many police have been seriously injured, or killed, in the line of duty each year for the last 10 years. I'd also like to see this information broken down by district.

Dear SBG
I refer to your request to NZ Police: “I’d like to know how many police
have been seriously injured, or killed, in the line of duty each year for
the last 10 years. I’d also like to see this information broken down by
district.”
Despite your having received an acknowledgement to your request indicating
it will be actioned under the OIA, it is necessary to ‘stop the clock’ and
establish your eligibility to request the information you have sought
under the OIA.
As you may know, section 12 of the legislation details who may make OIA
requests; and in line with guidance issued by the Office of the Ombudsman,
an agency such as Police “is entitled to ask reasonable questions to check
whether you are an eligible requester” (Making official information
requests: A guide for requesters [2016], accessible at
http://www.ombudsman.parliament.nz/resou...).
While we have no difficulty accepting the use of pseudonyms in email
addresses, which an OIA requester wishes to have replies sent to, when
anonymity is apparently sought by using just initials, I trust you will
understand that we first need to establish your section 12 eligibility.
Police requests that you provide supporting information as to eligibility,
such as your New Zealand postal address, personal email address indicating
a NZ domain, NZ phone number on which I can contact you, or any identity
documentation. I would be happy to receive further information by post or
email.
We will reinitiate the process of responding to your latest two requests
under the OIA once you have clarified your eligibility to make such
requests under the legislation. If not, we will treat the request as
withdrawn.

Dear Mr [Name removed]
I refer to your official information Act request of 10 July 2017. You
requested the following information:
“I’d like to know how many police have been seriously injured, or killed,
in the line of duty each year for the last 10 years. I’d also like to see
this information broken down by district”
Pursuant to section 15A of the Official Information Act 1982, I advise you
of the requirement to extend the time limit to respond to your requests.
The period of the extension is until 24 August 2017.
The reason for the extension is that the time required to research the
requested information, and for the consultations necessary to make a
decision on the request, is such that a proper response cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision to extend
the time limit for deciding upon your request.
Yours sincerely
