ACC Motorcycle accident costs
John Malcolm made this Official Information request to Accident Compensation Corporation
The request was successful.
From: John Malcolm
Dear Accident Compensation Corporation,
Your website states:
"In 2010/2011 we looked at the number of claims, severity of injuries and the cost of treatment and ongoing support for motorcyclists involved in accidents. We then changed the motorcycle levy to help reflect this data and the relative risk of injuries involving motorcycles compared to injuries involving other vehicles.
Levies are now spread more fairly across all vehicle owners, but motorcycle accidents are still largely subsidised by other motorists"
Please provide a breakdown of the most recent injury costs for the type of motorcycle activity being undertaken when the accident occurred.
At minimum this should separate road users from off-road user accidents.
Ideally this information should include injury cost sustained in any comparative year by motorcyclists in the following activities:
Off road leisure
Off road competition
Farm or agriculture-related (Are trike and quad bike accidents included?)
On road legally registered
On road unregistered
Finally, what proportion of all on-road injury costs for motorcyclists involved another vehicle?
Yours faithfully,
John Malcolm

I too have in the past requested info from ACC on facts relating to true costs of Motorcycle Accidents and was fed the same info received by the above requester.
I fail to see how ACC can make its claim and validate that Motorcyclists are subsidised when they do not have all the facts, that being who caused the accident in the first place, and they still count unregistered motorcycle accidents as in off road accidents yet lump all the costs on road registered motorcycles.
I am currently in correspondence with the new ACC Minister and will bring these facts to his attention.
