Funding for Museums

Ryan S made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council

The request was successful.

From: Ryan S

Dear Christchurch City Council,

I'm interested in how some of my rates are going to our wonderful city museums and also their funding if possible

How much funding did CCC give to the Canterbury Museum, Art Gallery and local museums in the past financial year?

If possible, how much funding total did the Canterbury museum receive in the past financial year?

What has happened to money previously provided to museums that have since closed due to the earthquake?

Yours faithfully,

Ryan S

Dear Ryan,

Thank you for your email, received on 3 November. You requested the
following information, under the Local Government Official Information and
Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):

“How much funding did CCC give to the Canterbury Museum, Art Gallery and
local museums in the past financial year?

If possible, how much funding total did the Canterbury museum receive in
the past financial year?

What has happened to money previously provided to museums that have since
closed due to the earthquake?”

Response

The Council paid the Canterbury Museum $7,251,337 plus GST in the last
financial year.

The Council owns the Art Gallery and Akaroa Museum. The net cost for the
2016/17 financial year for the Art Gallery was $16,032 million excluding
depreciation; and for Akaroa Museum was $419,000.

For the 2016/17 financial year, Long-Term Plan non-contestable grants were
paid to the Lyttelton Historical Museum Society, and the Okains Bay Māori
and Colonial Museum Trust, in the following amounts:

·         Lyttelton Museum - $5,000

·         Okains Bay - $10,000

The Council is not able to advise how much in total the Canterbury Museum
received in funding in the past financial year, as the Museum receives
funds from multiple different sources. We are therefore refusing this part
of your request under section 17(g) of the LGOIMA -  the information
requested is not held by the local authority. I advise you to contact the
Canterbury Museum directly for this information.

Funding that was previously provided to museums that are now closed, and
is therefore no longer required for this purpose, would be generally
reflected in rates decreases.

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review our
decision. Complaints can be sent by email to

Publication of responses to LGOIMA requests

Please note: our LGOIMA responses may be published on the Christchurch
City Council website a month after they have been responded to, with
requesters’ personal details withheld. If you have any concerns about this
please contact the Official Information team on
