From: Rich Aitken

Dear WorkSafe New Zealand,

What internal policies do you have for employees who have been the victim of sexual or racial discrimination in your workplace?

Further, how many complaints have been made either directly or indirectly involving racial discrimination to Human Resources (People and Culture). How many have been received, how many have been progressed, how many have been resolved?

Yours faithfully,

Rich Aitken

Dear WorkSafe New Zealand OIA,

Could you please clarify a few things:
-Where on your website does the employment relations problems policy sit as it does not currently appear to be there?
-What percentage of those complainants left WorkSafe following their complaints?
-What support do you as an employer provide complainants following the incidents?
-How do you record these incidents for reporting?
-How many complaints containing reference or an element of physical violence have you received in HR and how many have been resolved?

Yours sincerely,

Rich Aitken

Dear WorkSafe New Zealand OIA,

I would like to request the opinion of CEO Nicole Rosie on the prevalence of harm to WorkSafe employees as outlined in your response, and the level of protection given to complainants from HR that makes most complainants compelled to resign.

What is Nicole Rosie's vision on improving poor treatment of WorkSafe New Zealand staff?

Yours sincerely,

Rich Aitken

Dear Rich Aitken

Thank you for your further email about workplace bullying.

Nicole Rosie, WorkSafe’s Chief Executive, has provided a public statement
on bullying and harassment as outlined here:
[1]https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/bullying-....

Consistent with this statement WorkSafe,  has processes in place to
support early reporting and management of bullying and harassment
concerns.  We see it as a positive sign of an effective health and safety
reporting system that we have had reporting of concerns around bullying
and harassment in our workplace (noting that up to  1 in 3  NZ workers
report that they are bullied in any year).  The cases reported since
inception have all been followed up with investigations including
independent investigations initiated as appropriate to individual cases.
This is also consistent with what we do with other reported health and
safety incidents in our organisation (around 20 of these each year).
Whilst not all claims have been substantiated, we have taken them all
very seriously and actively worked to address the issues being raised.

WorkSafe is very focused on improving its people leadership,  culture and
internal health and safety performance.  We have invested  in building a
people and capability strategy , leadership framework and health and
safety capability and committees over the last year.  Development of our
people and culture is a key strategic focus in our just released strategy
to 2022.  Positively, our recent engagement surveying (just completed) has
shown a significant uplift in employee participation over the last year
reflecting a broad range of activities we are doing to build a high
performing culture and organisation..

In short, we are very committed to improving outcomes for NZ in the
bullying and harassment area and are at the same time actively working to
build a high performing organisation and culture that aligns with this
focus.

Kind regards | ngâ mihi nui
