New Zealand Police
Dear Mr Lock
I have been asked to let you know that Police requires an extension of
time in which to respond to your request for attendence figures for each
of the Arms Act service Delivery group Commuinity Discussion Sessions.
This extension is pursuant to section 15A(1) of the Official Information
Act 1982, because the request necessitates a search through a large
quantity of information and consultations such that a proper response to
the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.
Police require until 27 August 2018 to provide a substantive response to
your request.
You have the right to ask the Office of the Ombudsman to review this
extension.
Kind regards
Holly Foxwell

From: Malcolm Lock
Dear FOXWELL, Holly,
I fail to see how you require and extension of time pursuant to section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982, because the request necessitates a search through a large quantity of information and consultations such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.
These community consultations were conducted over a period of 28 days during June 2018, finishing on the 29th June. Less than one month ago. In total there were only 18 meetings.
The police have already indicated via their website that more than 500 firearms community members were met during the road shows, and 200 staff.
http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/firearm...
So an extension of time to gather 18 figures from events that concluded less than a month ago seems ridiculous bearing in mind that the police already know it was more than 500.
To know this figure indicates that head counts were conducted at each event. It certainly was at the event I attended.
There is no large quantity of information to go through to seek the attendance numbers.
There should be no reason to consult as the figures are factual and therefore no consultation is required.
A proper response simply requires a figure to be recorded against each of the events held, nothing more nothing less.
Please supply this information within 5 working days of today's date.
Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Lock

Dear TALAGI, Salote,
Just for your information, there was NO meeting in Napier, it was held at the Cornwall Cricket Club, Cornwall Park, Roberts Street, HASTINGS.
A bit of fact checking and accuracy would be most helpful in future OIA requests
Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Lock
From: Malcolm Lock
Dear TALAGI, Salote,
Also you stated that I missed Dunedin and you have been most helpful in adding this information.
If you actually read the request Dunedin is listed right from the beginning.
I get many replies from the police where it is obvious that the request has not been read or fully understood. Is it possible to hold a training course for staff to have some consistency around replying to OIA requests, it might just save a lot of requests being sent to the Ombudsman's office
Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Lock
