Total Number of Nepalese International Students In NZ
Prayash Chhetri made this Official Information request to Statistics New Zealand
The request was successful.
From: Prayash Chhetri
Dear Statistics New Zealand,
I have requested for information about the total Nepalese in NZ for which the response I got is enclosed here - The Census collects data on different ethnic groups and is only conducted every 5yrs. In the last Census 2013, there were 1,593 people who identified as Nepalese in NZ.
Can I have a total number of Nepalese students arriving in NZ every year may be from last year or whichever year the data was collected?
I represent a few Nepalese charity organisation and sports club, we conduct various social events to bring all Nepalese people within Auckland and NZ together and work with other charity organisation specific to Nepalese communities across NZ. We have seen an increasing number of Nepalese international students every year arriving in NZ, however we don't have any specific numbers on how many students are coming every year.
The main reason for requesting the number is to ensure that we have accurate information, and how better we can reach out to those numbers to help them with any queries/initial help.
Yours faithfully,
Prayash Chhetri

Statistics New Zealand
Dear Prayash,
The published data unfortunately does not include all countries of
citizenship. Only those with higher numbers.
We can make a customised table from the international travel and migration
data.
There is a charge as we are cost recovery, not for the data but for our
time etc.
It would be 2 hours at $155/hour.
The table could be something like this,
ITM data
Permanent and long term migrants
With Nepalese citizenship
Arrivals, departures and net
By visa type
For 2013 to 2017 calendar years and January to June 2018
We can produce this within 2-3 days of your confirmation.
I have copied in a colleague who also works with ITM, incase one of us is
not available.
There are some things to note,
Some students will be here for less than a year (therefore do not get
counted as PLT (must intend to stay or be away for 12 months at least, on
the form they currently complete).
Some people will come as visitors and then apply for a visa to study while
here – so visa numbers may not include all.
Immigration NZ have data on visas and may be able to help.
Please send your number and I can give you a call if you would like to
discuss.
Kind regards,
Clare

Dear Clare McGuigan,
Thank you for taking time to reply on the request. Can you call me at 022-4069742, in-case if I am unavailable would appreciate if you can drop a quick email at [email address] so that I will respond to your email.
All I am interested is on having a trend of Nepalese students as well as other immigrants (skilled/visitor/work visas) coming to NZ from last 3 years.
I can understand it's time taking process for your to refine the data from the exhaustive list, will the cost be same for the last 3 years or will be there any relaxation?
The census result of 2013 is of hardly any help as it doesn't give any further breakdown.
Do you think there is any other way to fetch that information which gives us information about Nepalese population in all visas + resident + citizens in NZ?
Yours sincerely,
Prayash Chhetri

Dear Prayesh,
It is certainly worth contacting Immigration NZ about the information you need.
I'm sorry I can't make the cost cheaper. I can include overseas visitors though in the table (intending to stay less than 12 months).
This would show those students who might be here for less than a year.
I will give you a call shortly.
