Filming Outside Ambulance Station
Paul J made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Paul J to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Paul J
Dear New Zealand Police,
On August the 31st, myself and my mate were taking photographs / recordings of an Ambulance returning to station here in Ashburton.
We have a Facebook group we share the photos to (this was the intended purpose) ━ we always make sure to blur out any faces if they are visible in frame.
These two ambulance workers came up to us after parking up at the station telling us we can't be recording them.
We were on a public side-walk, away from causing any obstructions.
We both felt rudely spoken to... it was very unprofessional how the man dealt with the situation.
I would like an example of why we're allowed to record in a public space, because I and my mate need some clarification.
Because what we've read here it's lawful: https://www.police.govt.nz/faq/what-are-...
Yours sincerely,
Paul J.

Tçnâ koe Paul
I have looked into your request, which was made on 6 September 2024.
The page for this request on the FYI Request website (https://fyi.org.nz/request/28320-filming...) indicates it was “withdrawn by the person who made it.”
However, as I gather you are still interested in receiving some information on is some information on the rules around taking photos or filming in a public place, I can refer you to the following FAQ on the Police website: https://www.police.govt.nz/faq/what-are-...
If you are seeking legal advice on this topic you may be able to obtain this from a Community Law Centre.
Ngâ mihi
