Monetary Payment for Blessing of Rocks for North Mole
Calvyn Jonker made this Official Information request to Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council
The request was successful.
From: Calvyn Jonker
Dear Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council,
1) Was any money paid to local iwi or iwi representatives (directly or indirectly) to bless the rocks to be used in the North Mole renovation? If so, what was the amount?
2) Is there truth to the assertion that an amount per rock was paid over for the rocks that were blessed? If so, what was that amount?
Yours faithfully,
Calvyn Jonker

Kia ora Calvin,
Please see below my response to your request for information:
1. There is no agreement to pay Iwi or Iwi representatives to bless
rocks specifically. However, there is an agreement to pay for Iwi services
as part of the project. This includes Karakia performed as part of the
project. I have included a copy of the 27 April 2022 Council item that
discusses Iwi services.
2. There is no truth to the assertion that an amount was paid per
rock paid over for the rocks that were blessed.

Dear Shaun Edwards,
Thanks for your reply. Re the monetary contribution for iwi involvement:
According to the minutes you sent, Te Pata Pūau receives $201 640 and the Cultural Monitor/Iwi Advisor receives $192 146. This seems like a doubling up of advisors and payments?
Yours sincerely,
Calvyn Jonker

Kia ora Calvyn,
I have been asked to respond to your email below. Apologies, I had considered your reply to be a comment rather than a question and had therefore not followed up.
Te Mata Pūau provides the high level guidance to the project partners regarding understanding their obligations to Te Awa Tupua and Te Tupua Te Kawa. The Cultural Monitor/Iwi Advisor monitors site works with respect to Tupua Te Kawa and provides appropriate support, guidance and implements kawa and tikanga as appropriate. The Cultural Monitor/Iwi Advisor also provides escalation notice in the event of an archaeological discovery, amongst other duties. In summary these are separate roles.
Ngā mihi
