Kia ora Cassandra,

The University wishes to clarify what specifically you are referring to
when you use the term disabilities support staff.

Support staff is sometimes used in the disability sector to mean the
casual/fixed term staff that work directly with students providing in
course academic assistance. For example we have sign language
interpreters, academic inclusion assistants and senior academic inclusion
assistants providing functions like assessment assistance, tailored note
taking, laboratory assistance. These staff are different from our
permanent office based specialist staff in our Disability Services team.

Can you please confirm if you are referring to permanent staff employed in
our Disability Services team or the casual/fixed term staff that work
directly with students on an as needed basis?

Dear OIA Requests,

In order to clarify my request,
I would be looking for information on Permanent disabities services staff, or these specialists.

However any information on numbers in regards to staffing in these other semi-permanent or casual roles would be a useful addition.

Yours sincerely,

Cassandra Saunders

Dear Cassandra,

I refer to your request of 11 April 2022, transferred in part to the University of Auckland by the Ministry of Education on 19 April 2022. The University's response follows:

" How many FTE disabilities support staff are at [the University of Auckland] and if relevant why there are discrepancies in these numbers."

In 2021, 28.82 FTE staff were involved with the support of students with disabilities at the University of Auckland.

"What is the allocation for these staff at [the University of Auckland], how many minimum are required."

There is no minimum staff allocation of FTE for the support of students with disabilities.

Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Ewert

Good Afternoon, Cassandra

I am responding on behalf of the university to your recent OIA request, in
which you have asked for the following information:

 1. How many FTE disabilities support staff are at each university
institution and if relevant why there are discrepancies in these
numbers?

·         Our permanent staffing resource for disability-specific support
roles is 3.5FTE.

·         We also employ casual staff to provide support to disabled
learners.

 2. What is the allocation for these staff at each institution, how many
minimum are required?

·         3 x Disability and Inclusion Advisors (two roles are currently
vacant).

·         1 x 0.5 Alternative Format Coordinator.

·         10 x casual staff

To the best of our knowledge, there are no internal or external
requirements on minimum staffing numbers.

Please me know if you require any further information.

Kind Regards
